  >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SANTA CLARA, CALIF. (July 29) -The PICO Group of Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: PTEC), a leading supplier of system enabling and system enhancing software for Special Purpose PCs and Appliances, today announced Phoenix PicoPAL, a new software product that provides a variety of important system functions for Smart Phones based on the GEOS(R) operating system from Geoworks. Smart phones and personal communicators will provide network companions to mobile users worldwide, allowing them to access their e-mail, voice mail, the Internet, or corporate data through new wireless networks such as PCS in the US, PHS in Japan and APAC, or GSM in Europe. The market for digital cellular phones and services in Japan alone is expected to grow from $448.5 million in 1994 to more than $1.72 billion in 1999, according to Dataquest. Phoenix PicoPAL provides fundamental services for silicon control, power control to extend battery life, and services for data storage and expand ability in a very small memory footprint. Tuned specifically for the Geoworks GEOS 3.0 operating system, it leverages Phoenix's years of industry-leading experience in BIOS and other system enabling software and combines it with market and technology requirements for the new age of personal communicators. "The smart phone is one of the hottest innovations in the telephone and computer markets and its worldwide potential is exciting," said Gordon Mayer, president & CEO of Geoworks. "For this reason we are committed to aligning ourselves with a select set of companies that can help this market take off -- Phoenix Technologies is one of these companies. In fact, we have already incorporated Phoenix PicoCard PCMCIA into GEOS 3.0 for smart phones." In addition, Phoenix PicoPAL works with Phoenix PICO Flash Array, highly-optimized software that provides a method to use FLASH chips like a disk. PICO Flash Array takes advantage of FLASH technologies' low power, high speed, and rugged properties, which we will be used increasingly in this new generation of personal communicators as well as PDAs. "The use of FLASH technology as a storage medium is critical in the emerging market of personal communicators," said Gary Forni, software manager, Intel Corporation. "The combination of Phoenix PICO Flash Array software and Intel flash components provides a complete solution allowing personal communicator developers to get to market quickly". Phoenix's PICO Group is actively in development with OEMs worldwide on Personal Communicator and Smart Phone platforms that will be available in 1997 using Phoenix PicoPAL and PICO Flash Array software. Phoenix PicoPAL and PICO Flash Array software is also being used in development of other hand held appliances for the emerging vertical application market. |
