Betty,

We are in agreement, but alas it is theory and hypothecation as to what should be and what is.

Obviously, I did not sign on at SI with a gender/sex neutral name, although I have known a couple of men whose nicknames were Holly. In other words, I do not hide my sexual identity here at SI and agree that to do so would tend to feed that which we rail against. You won't catch me doing the he/she bit either, and I often resort to bad grammar to avoid falling into this syntactical obscenity.

In the old BBS days, when the male/female ratio was about 95:1, I did sign on with various aliases which would lead others to believe I was male. The reason for my doing so was that I was online to get some work done, but couldn't with a name that identified me as a female. You see, in those days of yore, I was the only girl in the cybersaloon. When I was perceived to be just another guy online, I was left alone to go about my business. Those were interesting times for me. <vbg>

BTW, Holly is a nickname. My given name, as printed on my birth certificate, would tend to identify me as a male. In fact, my original birth certificate, as sent to the Hall of Records, gave my sex as male. Mother got that fixed real quick. <vbg>

Holly
