The way I see it the National Access Providers have been busting their tails just trying to keep service levels as they are now and I understand several are quite worried about an onslaught of attempted real-time voice traffic permiating the already overburdened data networks. Ironically many corporate IS people are in the same boat with their own internal networks and are having much the same thoughts.

This was previously posted but the story bears repeating:

"As the Internet continues to explode, the computer industry must develop
new technology to handle increased bandwidth demands, said WorldCom
chief operating officer John Sidgmore.

Bandwidth needs to double about 10 times a year, said Sidgmore,
who spoke during the NationsBanc Montgomery Securities Conference.
"The communications network of the 21st century will be built to support the computer-to-computer world, not to support human interaction," he said.
"To get to grow 1,000 percent [a year], the technology doesn't exist today. ... Don't get depressed. We will find a way to solve this."
