I think that DOJ is reacting to Capitol Hill's merger phobia plus the fact that the Microsoft antitrust issues are so hot right now. Couple that with the action of the E.U. and there is pressure on the DOJ to take a harder look. Regarding some of the quotes in todays press release, they sound like sour grapes.

Barr, general counsel at GTE, said "The irony here is that we're spending hundreds of millions of dollars and decades of regulatory effort to try to dismantle the traditional telephone companies and hammer them into a network of networks" like the Internet. "But right under our noses through a series of blitzkrieg acquisitions one player is getting a dominant position on the Internet -- the future of all telecommunications.">>

This viewpoint has me puzzled, anyone who has money can get in the "Internet" game. In fact it is what several are doing. Thoughts anyone...
