FireWire Heats Up Digital Video
New products use high-speed interface

FireWire, the high-speed digital-bus interface also known as IEEE 1394, is igniting a new generation of authoring tools for digital-video producers. While Apple has been slow to incorporate FireWire into its motherboards--that's slated to happen by the end of the year--developers are rushing to market with digital-video systems that take advantage of FireWire's blazing 400MBps transfer rates.
Adaptec Connects
FireWire-based video-editing systems typically include a PCI card, FireWire cable, and QuickTime authoring software. Three vendors, ProMax (714/727-3977, www.promax.com), Pinnacle Systems (650/526-1600, www.pinnaclesys.com), and DPS (606/371-5533, www.dps.com), have unveiled systems based on Adaptec's new HotConnect Ultra 8945, which features three FireWire connectors and an Ultra Wide SCSI accelerator on a single board.
