Well, James, I am not sure it is that easy to generalize about young girls. There is a real attraction by women and girls to really jerky guys who we will probably find out fertilize more women or something when science gets a little more advanced. There are usually some survival instincts from our primitive brains we do not fully understand yet in operation when we see something that does not make rational sense in the war between men and women play out over and over and over again.
Personally, I find big differences between teenage girls who are college bound and the ones who are not, at least in San Francisco where I live. The girls who are serious students have a big stake in their futures, and they tend to like the De Caprio-type nice, gentle guys. They also tend to date later, go out in big groups rather than as couples, and are really delaying heavy romance because they have a lot more school to get through and realize the guys they are choosing now are not probably going to be their husbands. They MAY become sexually active in high school, but they obtain reliable birth control first, and are not promiscuous.
The girls who don't have as much going for them academically are really making what seems like a rational decision when they decide to have babies early, because that gives them status, identity, something to do with their lives, and creates someone who will love them. Unfortunately, the reality is a lot harder than the sweet pastel fantasy, though. |
