jgercke, Perception is more important than reality when it comes to layoffs.

Sure no high tech companies (well very few anyway) have ever laid off design engineers, but they leave anyway. Why? The reason is often that a downturn like this one reduces the value of their options to ZERO. Remember this is half their salary (for the last 5 years or so) and it just became worthless. Now your talking about layoffs. Well if engineering layoffs ever do happen they occur at the worst possible time in the business cycle (last ones that I can remember were in the 90-91 timeframe) so if you get caught your really SCR**ED. Result is you find a better job because there are no shortage of offers. ADPT management needs to deal with this, that's all that I'm saying.

If you want to see this happening real time look at ATML and the battle that they are in with VTSS. ATML has recently gone through exactly the same crises that ADPT is facing, as each engineer leaves with them goes at least $2-3M / year in 99-2000 revenue.
