Economists knew SS was a demographic fraud (Ponzi) from day one, but it didn't matter because it was all about politics. That's what FDR taught Dems to do, trade the rights of others for votes. Very successful formula that he practiced to perfection. FDR deservedly gets the blame because he knew not only that it was a fraud but didn't care so long as it helped elect more Dems and the collapse would occur during the lifetimes of future (non-voting) generations. As for FDR's record debt, his favorite political economist mocked such concerns and even cracked, "who cares about the long run because in the long run we're all dead". Well, we're almost there. Thanks FDR for that actuarial debt time-bomb.
