Audio over the 'NET is a virus

Jeff Woodard says: "Internet packets are packets".

Well, he's almost right. "Realtime" audio over the net
requires the packets to be sent and received
*in sequence* or its just "packet noise". The result
is that realtime audio (or video) muscles out of the way
other packets that are travelling down the internet
"pipe" because they have assumed a priority
status.

The internet's low cost depends on the "democracy" of
data packets (every packet is as important as every
other packet). If realtime audio and video becomes widespread
on the internet it will require a new pricing scheme that
will be based on a per packet charge and settlement
process that will *radically* alter current business models
and we will revert to a scheme that looks alot like
the current phone service model. That would be a tragedy.

I'm an internet service provider and I call audio over
the net a very nasty virus that must be stamped
out. Why reinvent phone service? Why not use the phone?
Do you really think the phone companies will allow
voice packets to transmit over their transmission lines free?
