President Coolidge was a rara avis: a pragmatist who insisted that value be realized for action and/or expense.

One of my favorite Coolidge anecdotes concerns the time Mrs. Coolidge was ill and was unable to attend Sunday morning church services with the President. When Silent Cal returned from church, Mrs. Coolidge asked him what the minister had talked about. "Sin," he replied. Mrs. Coolidge then proceeded to ask him what the minister had had to say about sin, to which he replied, "He was agin' it."
