The lines are from Leonard Cohen's song 'The Future' on an Album of the same name. It is, you will forgive some lit-crit clap-trap, an expression of post-modern angst: in the aftermath of the fall of communism and the disappearance of Christianity as a viable philosophy of life, the poet feels rudderless and looks back with longing on an age when life's choices were simpler and in which the future, even if apocalyptic, was preferable to the future that we now have. The past was bad; the future is worse. From the same song:

Give me back the Berlin Wall
give me Stalin and St. Paul
Give me Christ
or give me Hiroshima
Destroy another fetus now
We don't like children anyhow
I've seen the future baby:
it is murder.

Kinda depressing, eh?
