From what I have seen, seems like your theory about "strategic inflection point" is coming for Adaptec. It's like Andy Grove said "Sooner or later, something fundamental in your business world will change..."
There are only few companies which can constantly evolve themselves - Microsoft, Intel and Cisco. There are a lot of companies catch the 1st wave but never been able to create the 2nd curve - MediaVision, Cirrus Logic, SIII, ESST, C&T, Adaptec...etc
Adaptec has enjoyed >60% margin in SCSI host adapter business for the pasted 6 years. The world has treated Adaptec so well that could have created an "sun will never fall" type of illusion for Adaptec's management team. With this in mind, they did not have any success after tried many different things in the past 5 years - printers, multimedia, PCMCIA, networking, ATM..etc. This is the 1st time I saw a dramatic change in their mind set. This is also the last chance and Adapte can not afford to lose.
