ChiTao: And I believe Andy Grove also noted that sometimes companies do not see the fundamental changes coming and react too late or not at all. Clearly Adaptec is changing but I do not yet see a major shift in its emphasis. Do you? The Symbios purchase represents a monumental corporate initiative--acquiring a company very nearly Adaptec's size. But there are huge similarities in the products as well as some differences. This deal seems to represent a commitment to the core business, rather than a diversion. Adaptec is in the bandwidth management business that, like the microprocesser chip business, is not likely to go away soon. And Adaptec is in the forefront of new technologies related to bandwidth management: moving larger amounts of information faster and farther.

The inflection points I see are radically reduced prices for PCs and inventory glut in some of Adaptec's customer OEMs. These may be less strategic than tactical inflection points, perhaps to coin a phrase. The glut will dwindle; and the lowering prices will require some cost saving measures. Then the sun will rise again. (Won't it?)
