Nancy, the only thing that keeps me fascinated about Jesus is that I, too sense some kind of very powerful love coming from an amazing prophet who lived so long ago. So I know what you mean. I think the whole thing has been completely perverted, however, and that's what turns me off about religion.

Jesus may have gathered crowds around him, but he was a rural preacher. If he had indeed been famous at the time of his death, there would have been contemporaneous reports in the historical record. In fact there were not, and only a few of his followers wrote about him at all, to keep his memory alive.
