Hopefully, SMU is finding some interest in and will be able to market their ITTR system for both rollover protection as well as frontal impacts sometime in the near future.

They had the product displayed at the SAE show in Detroit which I was able to inflate. The ITTR made it impossible for me to move either forward or up. The uninflated difference in thickness seemed to be about a millimeter or so. It wasn't even noticable. I also liked the way its additional width (when inflated) acted to distribute the energy resulting from an impact over a larger portion of the passenger's upper body.

It seemed to be both modestly priced and well suited for rollover protection. Especially when compared to the complicated, high-tech pre-tensioners which are being worked on. I feel there is a certain elegance to the design's overall simplicity. Form and function are well matched.

As for ITS, that system also acted to bear down on my shoulder which I imagine would act to help hold me in place in a rollover.

It's great to see BMW putting some heat on the domestic auto producers. Hopefully, they, and others are taking a serious look at ITTR.
