I'm lost in all of this. Adaptec has been supporting and pushing fiber channel for quite some time now and they have real products shipping. Yet it sounds like people here are concerned that Adaptec won't be able to offer any fiber channel products. Would someone please enlighten me?

As far as I can tell, Adaptec has consistently been a participant in the development of all new and coming interface technologies. That includes fiber channel and 1394. In addition, they have remained a leader in SCSI technology.

When I look at Adaptec's products, I see a very nice lineup and I see no areas where I would fault them for not participating.

Very soon now, 1394 is likely to become a major player for the home and small business sector. At the same time, fiber channel is likely to become a de facto standard for high performance systems with very high capacity.

And don't count SCSI out quite yet. It is still the best choice for a number of applications and you are not likely to see fiber channel replace it overnight.

Remember FDDI? In the minds of a lot of people, it was going to make Ethernet technologies obsolete. Instead switched 100 Mbps Ethernet showed up and now 1 Gbps Ethernet is here and FDDI does not look too attractive. Frankly, I could not see buying into an FDDI solution today. It costs too much and it doesn't do anything for me that I cannot get done cheaper and better with switched 100 Mbps Ethernet.

Thanks, Torben
