Okay, I've read the Georgia comments that Mrs. Turner made, and my own opinion is that what she said is probably true. There is enormous poverty in the South, and she specified northern Georgia. Has anyone been there, and can you say this is not true?
As you well know from that horrible argument at Feelings that I still feel sad about, there are 15,000,000 chronically hungry children in America. My guess is that quite a few of them are in Georgia, which is indeed a poor state.
I realize state officials are always quick to take exception to derogatory comments, which hurt feelings, business investment, and tourism, but again, as I understand it Jane was speaking at the U.N., trying to do good in a way. I think that she does not stop to think sometimes, but her intent was not nefarious. I am always putting my foot in my mouth when I am trying to do good, so I guess I just feel sorry for her. |
