Did the volunteer army come before or after the war was over? Zlot the Historian: after. The volunteer army was one of the consequences of the "war", or "police action" in Vietnam. Interesting: you were capable of realizing at the time that Indonesia was genuinely endangered, yes! possibly even Australia!, and that ONLY a Republican President could possibly get us out. (Well, okay, he actually did so, six years after he'd promised to, but what're a few more dead teenagers?) How odd that you can't remember when the draft was eliminated. I should think it was a question of some interest to you then. And, oh dear, I'm becoming quite confused about your age. You say the war would have had to last till 1983 for it to become a "problem" for you. One became eligible for the draft at 18. So that means you were born in 1965? My, my, your views on the conduct of the "war" were precocious!
