Duncan, the anti-war movement was NOT motivated primarily by self-interest. I was there, and remember clearly that everyone I knew could stay in college and graduate school or wangle a 4-F or go to Canada. Children of privilege really did not have to worry about having to fight in Viet Nam, but we were extremely concerned about the loss of life for the Vietnamese, and the Americans who did go over there.

It was the teenagers who did NOT go to college and had really poor alternatives who ended up being killed for the most part, and career military officers and patriots, who at least were making free choices. In fact, there were all sorts of efforts to talk to kids who were drafted or wanted to volunteer, and give them money to leave the country, free legal advice, and any other guidance that would have been helpful. We were begging them not to go, without feeling any real concern that any of us would have to serve. I knew absolutely no one who went.
