You're the attorney, but wouldn't your friend have a legitimate grievance over the adverse publicity surrounding his firing?

I know that in California, businesses must keep well advised as to what employee information they are not allowed to disclose, which is just about everything. I believe this allowed information is limited to the times or periods of employment and a couple of other equally general things I believe they are no longer even allowed to answer the question, "Would you hire this person again?"

Anyway, in California, I believe your friend would have a lot of avenues of recourse.
