Oh really? How about 2,000+ years of Western civilization? That's a VERY big difference: alcohol use predated this nation and there was a tradition of social drinking so prohibition faced a far far greater obstacle than we face with maintaining a prohibition against illegal drugs.

Besides, the tobacco story shows that if anything, we're moving towards stricter substance control rather than looser.
