I see nothing in the definition that requires one to take on or lead an insurgency against his group, or to change the direction of the group, to be a maverick. HST most certainly did not conform to his group in the examples I posited, and it doesn't matter whether his motivations were political. RR's motivations weren't political? Oh, that's right. He was a Republican, which, by definition, means his motivations were always altruistic.
