David, I respectfully decline the title "tower among physicians", since I am not a medical expert on anything. But yes, I do believe that even going back historically, people were/are compelled to seek drugs and excessive alcohol to treat some internal imbalance, perhaps sometimes having to to do with serotonin, or to kill psychic pain.

I think as we understand more of how the brain works, particularly chemically, drug and alcohol treatment programs will become more efficacious as we learn more. In San Francisco, at least, you can get acupuncture treatments for some kinds of drug addiction, and I think that is an interesting concept, as well.
