Christine,

There is quite a lot of literature, going back to the 1970s
and beyond, in support of the self-medication hypothesis.

But it's only very recently that I've learned about the
work on depression and opioid receptors, which suggests
that opiates and opioids might be used by thymoleptics
(depressives) for self-treatment.

Other very interesting work has been done on nicotine
and its effects on persons diagnosed with schizophrenia.
I know quite a few individuals with various forms
of this very disabling illness. Without exception,
they are smokers. The nicotine seems palliative,
as evidenced by their anecdotal reports, as well as
a few peer-reviewed journal articles.

But enough. I don't want to get flamed by you-know-who
for being off-topic. Perhaps I should start a forum
to discuss drugs.
