Jack, I was listening to NPR today, and there was a discussion of smoking. It seems that 41% of the teenagers in South Dakota smoke. I do not know the percentage for California, but only 20% of our adults still smoke (almost none of them in San Francisco, of course), so I doubt that the teenage rate is nearly as high as South Dakota's.

And today I read an article in the paper about smoking among black teenagers. While they start smoking marijuana at a younger age than white children do on average, they start smoking later. Now it is believed there is a link--there is a belief among black teens that smoking a cigarette after smoking marijuana makes the marijuana last longer.

I think teenagers disregard anti-smoking campaigns to some degree because they are sure they will be able to quit long before cigarettes would damage their health. I am not sure how we can convince them otherwise, since they all feel immortal.

In regard to your comments, it is very stressful being poor, always juggling bills and bill collectors, managing money down to the last penny, and feeling not so much in control of your life as more affluent people do. I think that this probably has a lot to do with why so many of them still smoke. It is one of their few pleasures in life.
