<<It is all in the name and marketing; not the technology>>
Call me igornant, but I'm impressed with the efficiency and speed of SI. It's by far the fastest site I use, and it is extremely user friendly to a non-techie. Perhaps the most impressive thing is how little I notice the nuts and bolts until I focus on noticing them--I sign in, check my messages, respond, and get out, all quickly and efficiently and without having to think about anything except trying to understand the technical information put out and occasionally say something sensible. The site does what it is designed to do effectively and efficiently. To me, that is the epitome of great design. (Compare with, e.g., ESPN, which to someone signing on at 33.6 is excruciatingly slow, cumbersome, and perpetually making you think about the mechanics of the site instead of the information.) In my experience, there are way to many ESPN-like sites and way too few SI sites. Let's not denigrate what works just because it's not flashy or maybe doesn't use the latest technological toys.
I just hope the new owners don't tinker with what's working so well! |
