SI is fast because it is technically simple; that is all I am saying. It is, in fact, easy to duplicate because of its utter simplicity. The fact that not too many others have implimented such a simple design is what is so surprising. SI is just a series of indexed flat files running on SQL Server. They have server side ISAPI coding that uses open database calls and it is all text. It is a great site; no doubt. It is just so simple to clone; that is why I find it surprising it is worth so much. It's value is that Brad and Jeff have marketed the site to the point that it has Yahoo-like name recognition. What I expect down the road soon is an Active Server Page based website application that is a community website package. All of the functions SI has and many better functions will be available. It will be expandable as each new technology cabability becomes practical. For example; instant video conferencing with anyone on the site; voice conferencing real time if arranged. The real strength of SI is in the time-deferred nature of it. It is a bullitin board; not a chat room. This makes it a lot easier to keep up with. Unlike chat rooms where the text is all streaming together; the database organization makes it easy to follow and it is slower since it isn't a streaming chat design, but a web posting board using a simple database to keep the messages organized. It is such a simple concept. When SI came out; it required a lot of custom programming to do database interactive server-side website design. This has all changed in the last year. Expect to see many more sites get easier to use; faster; and more interactive and organized. They came up with a great design; my point is that it is just so simple in the end.
