Jim,

talk it out long and gently with your kids before you ship them off to boarding school.

Very good advice, Jim. One of my six kids was an excellent student and himself broached the idea of going to a school with more to offer academically. He was also very close to his mother and me. The first year was very painful for all of us. He learned a great deal there, both academically and in self-reliance, but the price was very high in terms of emotional strain. Also when a boarding school kid comes home for the summer, he has no friends.

I guess it was OK overall, but I'm not sure I'd do it again. He is doing very well in an excellent University now and remains very close to us, but I feel we lost something during those boarding school years.

Jack
