Thought I'd pass along this 'tidbit' of news to the thread:

Dispute Overshadows Euro Launch
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union leaders have chosen
Dutchman Wim Duisenberg to head the central bank that will
manage their single currency. But under pressure from France, EU
leaders agreed that Duisenberg, currently head of the European
Monetary Institute, will not serve a full eight-year term as
president of the European Central Bank. He will step down once
the euro replaces national currencies in the 11 founder states
in 2002. French central bank governor Jean-Claude Trichet will
succeed him. Economists scorned the political compromise, saying
it would undermine the credibility of the fledgling currency to
be launched next January.
