KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 1998--InterDigital Communications Corporation (ASE: IDC) announced Tuesday that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., one of its strategic partners, announced it has signed a contract with Unicom, a state-owned telephone company in China, to install a B-CDMA (Broadband Code Division Multiple Access(TM)) wireless local loop system in China. Samsung said the system will be installed by Samsung in the city of Chongqing in the first half of 1998 with a test operation scheduled for the second half of 1998. Market analysts estimate that the demand for wireless local loop in China will explode within the next two years, reaching two million new subscribers a year. Samsung is now well positioned in China to proliferate the use of B-CDMA technology in this burgeoning market. Mark Lemmo, Executive Vice President of InterDigital, stated that, "We are extremely pleased that Samsung has been selected to supply the first B-CDMA WLL system to Unicom. We are honored that the Chinese government is interested in B-CDMA technology and recognizes the benefits wireless local loop. InterDigital will support Samsung in China as we will support our other partners, Siemens and Alcatel, with field trials in other parts of the world this year." Samsung became a member of the B-CDMA Alliance(TM) in 1996, joining InterDigital and Siemens AG in intensive research on B-CDMA technology which offers performance advantages and processes voice and data faster than narrowband CDMA and other technologies.
