I guess it's one of those fad things and everyone wants one bigger than their neighbor's. This isn't going to last much longer though - the automakers have a cumulative minimum average gas mileage figure for their combined sales of all vehicles that has to meet with EPA guidelines and it gets stricter every year. You sell too many of those GMC Suburbans and not enough GEOs and it will catch up to you. The only way to deal with it is to underpower the larger vehicles or price the less efficient ones much higher in hopes of altering the sales mixture. Fine and good, but what I don't like about them is the way they obstruct the visibility of other drivers. Pull up to an intersection with one of those things next to you and you have to follow its lead or risk finding a surprise, come out of Wal Mart with one on either side of your car and you need someone to motion "all clear" just to back out.
