Hi Viet,

I have stated earlier that SUN should increase pressure on Windows NT by cutting their prices in Ultrasparc, maybe someone was listening. As for Bill Gates, they know they are not in a position of strength. They have successfully entered the lower-end server market, however with the lowering of the Ultrasparc prices, they are in trouble. Mr. Gates concern is in the current quality of their and competitors products. The Solaris OS is already compatible with Windows NT and other Microsoft products. Also, the Ultrasparc technology is two years ahead of P7. For the next two years SUN will be a good as GOLD. Also, be aware that Sun will come up with a few surprises. The announcement of the Javastation(NC) was a shock. As Dan put "Sun doesn't like to announce anything until they have the finished product."
Dan thinks that the P7 might be the first mistake that Intel makes. If it is, look for Advanced Micro Devices and Cyrix to step in. Their chips are already better, but Intel has the hype.
Mr. Gates knows they will struggle until they have software to compete in 64-bit technology. Notice that all the other UNIX vendors protected themselves with creating Windows NT versions of their products (HP, IBM, DEC and Silicon Graphics). Look for Microsoft to team up with DEC for their Alpha chips. They will create software for that area to protect themselves if the HP/INTEL P7 does not work.
Mr. McNeely and company have answered the challenge! Let the war begin. It will be interesting until the year 2000.

Ellison
