JAKE,

Here's another post from AOL.....very interesting and explains a little better the possible relationship between ADC and PLFM....

>>>I am in receipt of a copy of an article in PCS Week magazine dated May 13, 1998. Title of which is COMPANY DEMONSTRATES GSM NETWORK USING AIRCRAFT BASED ANTENNA PLATFORM.

This seems to be the week for GSM to look at alternative delivery mechanisms. First it was satellites, with four satellite companies joining the global GSM Assocation, and the GSM Alliance supporting a bid by Celsat for spectrum before the FCC. Now airplanes are getting into the act. Platforms International Corp PLFM (PIC) used GSM equipment from ADC Telecommunications Inc. ADCT in a validation of concept demonstration of its Airborne RelayCommunications. System at ADC's San Diego facilities. ARC would provide wireless coverage using unmanned aircraft piloted remotely from the ground to essentially act as very tall antenna towers. PIC said the aircraft would circle a fixed point at approximately 60,000 feet laying down a 300 mile diameter communications grid. The aircraft which look very much like gliders although they actually are powered by a specially designed engine wouldremain on station for approximately 48 hours before being relieved by another plane and landing for maintenance. PIC said the system can thus provide year-round continuous coverage, and carry 1.4 million simultaneous cells.

The article goes on, and at the end says PIC President Howard Foote said the company expects to disclose plans for business acquisitions, investment banking relationships, contract status and other details on it's progress by the end of the month (Todd Violette, for PIC 410-579-8190) <<<
