I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that the NC concept IS distributed computing. It's just not distributed mass/persistent storage. I have seen Java described as a general purpose language. Have any of the programmers reading this studied Java enough to enlighten me if I'm wrong (I'm embarassed to admit I haven't read any of the many introductory texts on Java)? Isn't Java capable of doing most of the computational tasks of which C++ is capable?

Bottom line: could I write a spreadsheet in Java (I understood you could)?
