Yes. And note that MCI is keeping its retail internet business. Wcom/UUnet has the stronger backbone business. The combination will remain by far the largest internet backbone provider. With a huge rep and business connections.

Sooo....guess what. They take the $625 million, pay off debt, then rebuild most of the same capacity using the newest greatest switches, etc. coming out of the network equip. makers. I.e., they shed older equipment and replace it with new stuff. Hardly getting out of the business. Pretty nice.

And who thinks Cable and Wireless is gonna be a formidable competitor?
