slob: Thanks. I agree 1394 probably is not the next SCSI-type market for Adaptec, but it is an emerging market in Adaptec's area of expertise and thus an area worth maintaining a market share. You note: "it is almost pointless to try to understand where a given company will end up, in an emerging market like 1394". Perhaps true, but it would be even more pointless for Adaptec (or for investors/potential investors) to ignore that emerging market.

I see that Symbios is not into 1394 cards but also has a 1394 interest, so the merger of the two companies will be complementary, it seems, in the 1394 area, rather than redundant. Your comment--"the fabless house like Adaptec"--is true now but may not be, when/if the Symbios deal goes through. Some have speculated that Adaptec will dump the fab, after a deal. I am not well informed on the future of 1394 but it looks like it will be a couple of years before it is interesting.

Please explain what is meant by "ADPT's PHY's Stink"--is Adaptec into PHYs? I am uninformed but interested.
