A VPN passes data through the network - but in an encrypted fashion. Firewalls allow/disallow traffic into/out of the corporate network based on security policy. A combination of both is most secure. VPN's actually get into the frames of the data while firewalls allow/disallow the entrance/exit of the data into the network - again a combination of both is viewed as most secure.

Triant is doing a good job marketing the usage of VPN's - and they are definitely being deployed in the enterprise community - much like she said at the beginning of the year.
