To Cheryl et al:

I like to sit on the sidelines and watch the suppositions fly. Fear of loss always generates desperate responses.

Let me offer some facts to the discussion that may alter some impressions. NCs are not an x terminal (character based transmission) or 3270 (block multiplexor transmission) replacement as they have processing power inherent which neither of the aforementioned terminals have. They will not flood the net as only updates to an application's screen will be sent as opposed to full screens. 72% of the cost of ownership for PCs is spent on MAINTENANCE(ref. IDC study). This includes version upgrades to software, hardware [read disk] upgrades to hold bloated software, faster processors, user support (the first questions being 1)what software are you running? 2) What version? 3) OK What's your problem?). Under the Java paradigm, the master version of an application is loaded on the server, and when a user logs on, the user gets the same software as everyone else running that application. Only updates to the screen are sent over the wire. Users can't load software that can screw up an application or a system. They are restricted as to what they can run by what is available on the server as a Java applet (read Java application). They also can't play solataire or free cell etc. unless the sys admin loads it on the server. IMHO this alone will add millions of hours to the productivity of workers. Those that decry the paradigm as a throwback to "centralized" processing fail to realize that the computing of work to be done is done on the NC and the results sent to the server for upload to the mainframe or the C/S database. It is an interesting solution to the problem$ that the proliferation of PCs has caused. It provides for version control of applications, easy software distribution (i.e. it's not distributed, but downloaded only when needed), a one time fix to problems that do arise and therefore everyone has immediate access to, and provides the same, if not more, compute power to the users.

Well, this was not meant to be a commercial, merely INFORMATION in a sea of uncertainty and half truths. Back to the sidelines to observe.
