Sounds like a commercial to me!

Sounds like we could download new version update changes of the microsoft off the
net and store them on our PC disk. Then we would only have to update
them when the version changes and we would only have to download them
once per version change instead of every time we want to use them.
This is a good software distribution method that could cut the cost
of maintenence for the home user. But you do not need JAVA to do this.
It can be done for any program. If it's an intranet the same is true.

There is an effort here to minimize the effects of downloading applets
to a pleurality of users and uploading and downloading the referenced data
and resulting data over the already belabored networks. Infinite bandwidth
would help this proposal.

I am sure that game applets will be made available on the net.
If it's an intranet diskless NC then you can control the game playing
if that is your main objective. But this is slave galley mentality.
It okay if your the master but I would not want to be a slave.

Seems to me the real issue here is control and not neccessarily maintenence
cost containment. There is a adminstrative god somewhere deciding how this
person is going to be allowed to use his computer. Goodbye to "open systems".
Goodbye to individual inititive and creativity. Goodbye to privacy.
A lot of the better employees will leave to work for less strident
masters.

How much is it going to cost us to go to this kind of computing environment?
No one has answered this question satisfactorily IMO.
