Dirk Hente has had a lot of experience with WinGate and using software instead of hardware to share a modem. Please see post 1570 Message 5032908

Keep your system as simple as possible to start with. You can start with a 2 computer network and easily expand it to a 4 to 6 computer network. All of the hardware, except maybe a crossover cable, you buy for a 2 computer network will be useable with 4 or 6 computer network.
One of the ways you can keep it simple is to is to go WebrampM3i even though it costs more.
