Cheryl, where is the meat of your remarks?

I take your response as your personal opinion since you have not given any
supporting facts.

The so called NC is hard to distinguish at the heldheld level from
a PDA. At the desktop level it is almost indistinguishable from
an X-terminal or a laptop PC without a disk. The substance of the NC
seems to be JAVA. IMO JAVA is a good idea, but it has nothing to do
with its hardware host. JAVA is a mutation of C++. Its a language
modified for use on the net.

JAVA applets are currently being used in heterogenous networks which
include PC's and the so called workstations. Incidently, the difference
between the PC and a workstation is becomming difficult to discern.
So your comment that you expect NC's to replace desktop PC's, is
empty.

As to SUNW's ability to continue to post earnings and revenue growth,
I have said nothing. My comments have been limited to the murky
notion of the NC which SUNW and ORCL have been touting. The hardware seems
to be defined minimally as a diskless computer with a network port.
Maximally, it is indistinguisable from a PC. The key is that it downloads
JAVA applets from a server. The required data and the resultant data may
be loaded across the net. The reliability of whole thing is dependent
on the reliability of the network and the network servers. The integrity
of the the operation is dependent on the network and server staff.

There are IMO markets for handheld and desktop computers whose
capabilities have been restricted to the users. Possibly, hospitals
pharmacies and manufacturing where the strict floor discipline is
mandatory and flexibility is to be discouraged. But these are niche
markets.

There are a number of companies which are writing programs (some using JAVA)
to address the problem of downloading software revisions via the internet and
or intranet. These products have nothing to do with the NC. They are targeted
at the PC not the so called NC.

The NC notion is an effort to deflect the eroison of marketshare from
the from Pentium based desktop and server platforms. From the ORCL point
of view, it is an effort to deflect MSFT software inititives.

SUNW and ORCL may find themselves in a world of hurt within 18 months
unless they can do better than the NC.

Food for thought!
