Battery Explodes Near 1st Daughter

Monday, July 13, 1998; 10:41 a.m. EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton's tour of historic landmarks got kicked off with a bang today -- literally.

A loud pop disrupted a ceremony at the Smithsonian Institution's American History Museum when a camera battery blew up just a few feet from Chelsea Clinton. Secret Service agents quickly reacted as smoke from the blown battery spread throughout the area.

The president's daughter appeared unfazed as the cameraman tore off his battery belt with the help of a colleague. The cameraman quickly resumed filming.

At the ceremony, President and Mrs. Clinton acknowledged receipt of a $10 million contribution from Polo Ralph Lauren Corp., to restore the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write ''The Star-Spangled Banner.''
