Scott, I am inclined to agree with you on the strip mall concept. The internet is an infinite strip mall with space for all and as fashions change so will gateway appeal. When a gateway loses it's hot appeal all it's clients will be dragged down. Some, however will jump ship or appear on many gateways trying always to be ascendant on average.
Some will make their own site a gateway in it's own right. After all once you know where you want to go it is a click away. Conventional print media(those that survive) and product advertising seem like one good way to show people where to click. Search engines will also work as long as you have a brand name. Generic searches will bring the engines advertisers for that thing to the front of the queue, like airlines have their flights listed first on Sabre etc.
In essence it will be a wild west scenario with people all taking off in all directions and many could be successes. The "governments", by that I mean the gateways that want fees(taxes) for position might just find they will slip through their fingers. Look for direct authoring to hit at the amazons as a $2 direct e-mail fee for a book beats amazons price, pays the author right away and also pays the author more than the usual royalty. Look for publishers and printers and paper makers to hate this trend(which is an infant now)
