According to the Associated Press, Mr. Clinton's private lawyers have
told agents not to talk about anything they might have heard
when the president was talking to his lawyers. Why the
president's private lawyers are talking to them at all is a
mystery. It looks like nothing so much as an attempt to
intimidate the witnesses. If the president's lawyers are
concerned about incursions into the lawyer-client privilege, they
can take that up with the judge overseeing the grand jury; but
by having his lawyers take the matter directly to those who
have been subpoenaed, Mr. Clinton gives the impression he is
attempting to influence their testimony.

The Clinton administration has been unable to find a single
judge who will agree that those agents shouldn't testify. And
there is very little chance that Mr. Clinton will ever find one.
Instead, the president may find that more and more judges are
getting wise to the constitutional dangers that his legal and
political maneuvers pose.
