Just read a "SCSI vs ATAPI for CD-R" article in the August EMEDIA Pro magazine. Since it's a "feature" article of the issue, they don't have it available on their web site (www.onlineinc.com/emdeia).

The only positive on IDE/ATAPI is a slight price advantage in my opinion. In their summary paragraph, they say "If you require high performance, multiple device support and multitasking, SCSI is well worth the small additional cost." Article's not extremely technical, but it does clearly make the point that your SCSI leaves the bus and CPU free to do other things whereas IDE leaves much of the PC inaccessible and underutilized while it's involved in a slow CD-R write operation.

FWIW
