He gambled that if he told the truth his supporters wouldn't desert him, the right wing conspiracists would still hate him but so what, but the people in the middle wouldn't care because they were bored with the whole thing and the economy was good so who cared if he had sex with her years ago and found a clever way to avoid telling the press about it. And he won his gamble.
