There is a Canadian version which does not involve anti-greenism (we don't have anti-greenism up here). In the Canadian version, the ant must work twice as hard for a dollar that is worth half as much and then give half of that to the government so that they can give it to the grasshopper in the form of unemployment insurance which is adjusted to reward the grasshopper with 50 weeks pay for working 2 weeks a year.
In fact, 26 grasshoppers get together and share a job by working 2 weeks a year and each is then supported for 50 weeks using funds from the more fortunate working insects. If a region does not have enough ants busting their humps, a regional adjustment is made so that areas ripe with ants pay for grasshoppers not willing to move where the work is.
Recently, ants of northern european origin have been required to pour tax money into an area of ants of southern european origin (you see, there was a war about 200 years ago which the southern ants lost and the northern ants decendants must now pay or have this great country break up). The money is used to build a southern ant country in which the northern ants are not welcome, even for visits.
To burden the poor working ants further, crickets, which were here first, feel that 400 years ago the ants stole their land and the ants must now not only pay to keep the crickets from working, any crickets which do happen to work are not subject to any of the taxes (and I mean none) that the ants must pay.
You see, the Canadian version makes the grasshopper work at least a little bit, but keeps the ants working because they have to eat and taking away just enough so that they don't ever perceive what it is like to have comfort or luxury (that is reserved for the other insects however, please do note that a southern ant is now considered by law, to be an insect other than an ant).
It really hurts when the working northern european ant must see their offspring deemed not eligable for student loans and student aid (which they need because the ant is tapped out) while grasshoppers, southern european non-ants and crickets receive free post secondary education while driving new Cameros and Firebirds purchased with "allowances".
(things aren't really that bad.... when the ant has a brain hemorage or a corinary, the health system picks up the tab if by luck, a bed opens up in the hospital before the ant dies).
