Broderbund Releases Arthur's Computer Adventure, the First Living Books CD-ROM Combining Storybook and Activity Center Elements in One Product
The First Interactive Storybook That Lets Children Read About Arthur and Also Play Games With Him. New Living Books Title Features Five Learning Activities, Surprises, Puzzles, and Fun Galore!
NOVATO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1998--Broderbund Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:BROD) today announced the release of Arthur's Computer Adventure, by Marc Brown, the first CD-ROM in a new evolution of the Living Books(R) series. In addition to reading along in Arthur's latest adventure, children can interact directly with Arthur(R) by playing activities that are integrated within the story.
Arthur's Computer Adventure is the first Arthur title in the Living Books series to more fully incorporate storybook and activity center elements. The enhanced interactivity increases the CD-ROM's depth and replay value by encouraging youngsters to revisit the title again and again. Because it combines fun with learning, Arthur's Computer Adventure is ideal for play at home or school.
"Kids told us they want to do more than simply read about Arthur. They want to play and interact with him too," said Laurie Strand, vice president and general manager, Kids Studio, Broderbund Software. "In the latest evolution of our Living Books series, we've combined the best of both worlds. Interactive activities are deeply embedded in richly illustrated and beautifully written stories."
Building on the success of Arthur's Teacher Trouble, Arthur's Birthday and Arthur's Reading Race, this latest interactive adventure finds Arthur and his pal Buster scrambling to fix a computer Arthur's mom told him to not touch while she was at work. While helping Arthur out of the jam, and laughing themselves silly, kids develop reading, vocabulary, math, logic, and creativity skills.
Arthur's Computer Adventure is the sixteenth CD-ROM title in the innovative and highly acclaimed Living Books series -- a series that has won more than 80 awards for excellence in software and education. Designed to captivate (and teach) children ages three to seven, Arthur's Computer Adventure lives up to it's proud multimedia heritage with a delightful children's story, superb animations, five activities, wacky sound effects, hundreds of clickables, thirteen puzzles and surprises, and coloring pages.
The Plot
Arthur loves to play "Deep Dark Sea" on the computer. When his mom leaves for work and asks him not to touch the computer, he can't resist. Arthur and Buster dive into the game and play long enough to fight over the mouse and make the screen go blank. Can they fix it before mom returns?
In addition to the charming storybook, Arthur's Computer Adventure features five learning activities, each with adjustable levels of difficulty.
Activities Include:
Deep Dark Sea, a side-scrolling arcade-style activity, teaches world geography and ocean life while kids hunt for sunken treasure.
D.W.'s Store sharpens counting skills. Children shop for D.W.'s toys and cook up wacky recipes in the cafe.
Treasure Hunt focuses on building reading and prereading skills. Fun and challenging, it encourages children to learn new words. Play against the computer or a friend.
Frankenfish is a "school" for creativity. Kids learn about real sea creatures and assemble their own from eyes, fins, props, and stickers. Print out for coloring book fun.
Toy Copter challenges young eyes and fingers to find a fire helicopter and use it to drop water balloons on a target, do fun aerobatics, or lower a ladder to rescue firefighters.

Regular and special gift versions of Arthur's Computer Adventure will be available in August wherever software is sold.
