WCOM's beta is 1.40. Granted, quite high relative to its peers (T, GTE, BT), but interestingly, MCIC, which has perforce been moving roughly in tandem with WCOM lately, has a beta of only 0.99.

The numbers you are quoting must be quite old. MCIC is even more volatile then WCOM. Today MCIC is up 2% while WCOM - only 1.4%.
