I think Orrin Hatch is loath to have a Congressional impeachment deal in his current watch for some reason. I think the potential splitting off of the Lewinsky related material may be a design to defeat and early resignation or impeachment.

I think a quick ouster might be viewed politically advantageous for the Democrats by the Republicans in that Gore would be running in 200 as incumbent.

I think a weakened lame duck is considered more desirable.

However, this has certainly taken far more of life of its own than anyone could have ever imagined, so anything is possible.

What is clear now is that Clinton has widely lied. Admittedly even to his wife. This is a real wild card. How the family deals with this aspect in the coming weeks and months will be a telling tidbit. I was not surprised by seeing some coverage of their running off to beach again in a show of apparent solidarity. But it wasn't particularly convincing to me that a real matrimonial bonding was present.

If Starr has a bunch of other (non-Lewinsky) evidence to present I'd give it till just after this goes to Committee and/or the November election results are history. I am assuming the Democrats see or fear a weakening either in the pre-election polls or post-election results.

I cannot conceive as a few of his most ardent supporters believe that this 7 month process has been good for Democrats. Just review Leon Panetta's position throughout, or his flight from his Cabinet role in 1996.

Oops! All this seriousness on the Boink thread...my my, where are my manners.

Someday just maybe the highest office in the land will be held to a morality level at least a smidge higher than current. Is that really so much to ask ?
